Title: Sue - Were You Able To Travel?
Description: I read that flights are still grounded
MyBoyGus - April 16, 2010 07:09 PM (GMT)
Sue, I heard that flights are still grounded in the UK, I am thinking about you. Hope you were able to get to you destination, but I'm afraid that you couldn't. Just wanted to let you know we're thinking about you. I got evacuated from the beach one time due to a hurricane, it really sucked. It took us about 5 hours to get to the beach, and about 13 hours to get home. That's what happens when everybody leaves at the same time.

Hi Mel. We are not due to travel until Monday morning, but its not looking good for us. We can't phone anyone until Sunday at 11am, then we have a few hours to decide what to do, as we have a airport hotel reservation for Sunday night. We are all packed, but I don't think we will be going, we are really upset, but so are hundreds of other people. Its just a freak of mother nature. :sadsmiley2

I'm so sorry Sue. I was hoping you could find another way to go. :hugsmiley :hugsmiley We were upset about the hurricane, but the only thing I could do was complain about traffic. Everybody was safe, disappointed but safe. I hope you can get some of your money back for the trip. We got a little bit back, but not for all the time we paid for.

There is no other way to get there its a 4 hr flight over the ocean!! :laughingsmile We will get all our money back from the tour operator. Hubs phoned them today (they were very busy!) & they will be able to tell us tomorrow wether Mondays flights are cancelled. So at least then we will know & can just get on with a week together at home. Its the not knowing thats driving us crazy!
Edited on Sunday to add: Its been cancelled! :sadsmiley2

oh Sue, I'm so sorry you couldn't get away...its really unfair, 2 of my friends are in the same situation and are feeling pretty glum about it. Give your doggies a big hug to make you feel better!

Sod the housework and cooking and chill and eat out!

Sounds like a great idea, vacation from home. I'm sure there are lots of day trips you can do.
I just heard about an organization who is matching up people who are stuck because of the volcano to families who are willing to put them up. I heard about one person in New York who is putting up 2 elderly Brits who are waiting to go home. The person said that the ladies were told that they wouldn't be able to travel until next Monday, meaning a week from tomorrow. Crossing the pond may be a bit harder since you would have to travel past Iceland, it will take them quite a while to sort everything out. I am thinking about signing up to help somebody out. We'll see, anybody who is interested can go to www.travelersaid.org.

What a great idea Mel! I know our tour operator says that even when the flight are allowed again (maybe in the next few days) they then have to give top priority to getting people home. The Navy have been deployed today to do just that. So things won't be back to normal for some time yet. It makes you feel quite vunerable really.
