Title: New Born Bunnies

Harleygirl - March 27, 2010 11:20 PM (GMT)
I am dog sitting this weekend and when I brought "Brady" to my house I thought I would give him a few minutes to adjust to the house and the yard. He (a beagle mix) was investigating my fenced in area while I was wandering around seeing the new spring flowers etc. I noticed he had been very quiet in one area for awhile so I went to find him and he had dug a hole (in my front yard)! As I went to fill it in I saw 3 little bodies crawling on the grass! Brady had dug up a rabbit den and the poor babies were uncovered. I called a wildlife rehab hospital and brought them in as instructed, only to be told by the vet to bring them back home and re-bury them! She said their best chance of survival is with Mom and that Mom will probably return at night. I brought them home and put them back in the ground and covered them with a little dirt, grass & leaves and their Mom's nesting fur. I hope they survive. We are having unseasonably cold temps this weekend (below zero) so I am worried about them. Here is a photo that I took just before I covered them up (I also put a pen around the area to keep Brady out!)

O dear, hope mum turns up again. Can she reach them with the pen around?
You could bottle feed them, but that takes a lot of time and determination.

The pen is only on one side. The other side is a wooden fence that Mom has already been squeezing through. This morning it looks like the grass & leaves is moved just slightly and I don't see any babies wandering so I'm hoping that means she returned and was feeding them last night.

Oh wow, you were very good to look after them. I hope they survive the weather. Spring is here & the newborns are being born & we are forcast rain, sleet & snow!! :shrug

I am quite worried about them with the weather we've been having too. We had extremely cold temps (just below freezing) here over the weekend and now we are in day one of three days of rain (3-6 inches). The news tonight showed that we have just set a record for the rainiest March. We've had over 11 inches of rain and a lot of the rivers, streams and roads have flooded more than once this month. It looks like Mama bunny has returned since the burrow appears to be sunk in a bit but so far it seems undisturbed by any other animals and the babies have stayed inside. :clap
