My bees were out yesterday! Thought some of you might like to see.

I am surprised they came out with snow on the ground. Do you collect your own honey combs in one of those big hat things? How interesting. :clap

Neat!! Can't wait to see more pictures. I will have to show my little fellow (3 yr old); he loves the pictures on this site.

:holeymoley: Sorry girls, I'm petrified of bees :ph43r:
I got pushed into a nest of them then I was little by my sister and she ran to the house and left me there in a stroller :shrug and I was covered in them and was stung very badly. I don't remember it but today I have a huge free of them.
Even just looking at the pictures make me squirm

Wow! What great pictures! Very interesting! Now, what is fanning? Do the bees actually MAKE the honeycomb or just the honey?
Rusty's mom - January 24, 2009 05:03 PM (GMT)
:ph43r: I am like GoldenFrost. Forget those bee's. They must know I don't like them. To many times they have stung my dogs. So I don't like them at all.
Very interesting though.

Beekeeping is just a hobby for me. I love nature and saw an ad for a class on beekeeping 5 years ago and I've been hooked every since. I'm secretary of our state group and I run the young beekeeper program. I have 9 hives and sell some honey, but mostly just love the bees. I think they are God's most amazing creatures.
Goldenmom - the bees actually make the wax in their bodies and shape it into the combs. Fanning is the bees' way of telling others where home is. They release a pheromone (scent) into the air and fan their wings. They have many different scents and if you smell bananas - you better get out! It is their alarm and attack scent.
Honey bees don't just attack for no reason like yellow jackets or wasps. If they sting you, they die, so they only sting to protect their home or if they feel threatened. The males (drones) don't even have a stinger.
I could go on and on, but Ill stop there.

 Acually they were yellow jackets that stung them. I get swarms of them around here and they don't die easy or go away.

very interesting........ but I'm not a fan of bee's either. one got me on the boob one and it swelled up and itched so bad it would wake me up in my sleep!!! I stay far away from bee's!!! its intersting tho. thanks for sharing!

Very interesting hobby. I love watching insects including bees and have been teased about my photographing of insects that I find interesting. (I've also photographed a snake eating a frog just outside of my front door and my family thinks I'm nuts because I find those things interesting.

That's another thing that fascinates me. I've been stung a few times and it hurts but I just go with my grandfather's old remedy and put mud on the sting. It works fast!
The only time I've been stung is when I've accidentally stepped on or covered my hand over a bee. I try to tell people not to panic when a bee is nearby. I've had bees land on me and then fly away. I think a lot of people get stung because they start swatting and scare the heck out of the insects. I know bee stings can be deadly to some people and maybe I would feel differently if I was that allergic!
BTW I'm allergic to honey - severe stomach pain, throat closes up and gums turn bright red if I eat any. Haven't had any for about 10 years and don't want to test it again!
Is the bees coming out a sign that spring is near?

I remember being a little girl visiting Aunt Ella and she had a huge lane going down to the sea; well, it was full of flowers and I was on my red tricycle singing "picking up my baby bumblebee, won't my Mama be so proud of me...." Well, I caught a baby bumblebee and squooshed it in my hands like the song. I got stung.
Not afraid of them though; I try not to show fear around Judd because I don't want him to be afraid of anything.
