Title: New Foster Diamond
MyBoyGus - January 21, 2008 11:19 PM (GMT)
I got her this afternoon, very sweet girl. I think she looks older than 1 though, I'll have to look at the records. She did fine meeting Gus, but Eddie was acting like a maniac and she curled her lip at him a bit, not that I blame her. I got Eddie quieted down and they met again and they were fine.
When we got them into the house, she and Eddie ran around a bit, but she had her hackles up, and she was sniffing Gus and Gus started growling at her. I nipped that in the bud and put her into the crate for a few hours to get used to everything here.
Eddie was laying next to her and would run up to the crate and play bow to her. What a nut!. Anyway, I let her and them out to pee, and she was fine with them. She was teasing Eddie and they chased each other around the house. When we went out for our walk, she was fine with the women and female dogs that she met and was scared of Richard. So I have come to the conclusion that she is scared of the male species as a whole, dog or human, and after she has gotten to know them she seems to be fine. That may change, but that is how it seems now.
Here are some pics of her. She is rather short, Eddie is 5 or 6 inches taller than she is. My guess is that it is the last person's fault and she left them togther, and she needs to be crated with another dog, but just for a short period of time. We'll see how the week goes on, a girl can change her mind. :laughingsmile

On my gosh Mel she is just beautiful. I think black labs are so beautiful as their fur always looks so silky. I do hope that your week goes well and that everyone gets along and that an order gets established in your pack soon. Eddie sounds like a silly goose. I have a few of those. :love663: You sounds like me when I get a new one and tempers get up....I also take them straight to the crate to get some calmness.
Oh my neighbor has a female black lab that also has short lets and the barrel body....I think it is adorable. Let me know how it goes with Diamond and your sweet boys kay? I bet she will love your boys once she gets to know them and realizes that males can be fun and loving. Makes you wonder what happened in her past to make her so scared of males huh?

Well, I have a few guesses, but it is strange that it is with both dogs and human males. Diamond ate in the crate tonight, I didn't want to chance her being food agressive, so I always feed fosters in the crate. She did fine, but I will still continue that.
She is a bit attention starved too, in fact, if I am petting Gus and Eddie, she has to get in between us and get the pets for herself. I heard a little growl in there somewhere, I'm sure it was her and she was getting possessive of the pets. She got corrected, and I am making a point that the boys get their pets too, she has to learn. They seem to be deferring to her a lot, to the point where she lays by me and they are a little hesitant to approach. That is going to have to change too, but I'm not pushing anything now. She is super submissive to me, but can be a bitch to the boys, and they haven't done a thing.
All in all, I think that she would prefer to be an only dog so she can get all the attention, but so far so good. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Well, let me catch you up on Diamond's saga. Diamond curled her lip up the first few days, she got corrected and nothing serious. She would try to get between me and Eddie and Gus and then defended her position. I fixed that by not letting her get between us. Then, I was home sick one day, and I fell asleep on the couch. She must have come over and lay on the floor beside me when I was asleep. Eddie came over to tell me that he had to go outside, and she went after him. It was just a lot of noise, but Eddie was very upset about it. She went directly into the crate and punished.
She was OK when she came out of the crate, but then she and Gus were starting to interact. She wanted to go neck to neck with Gus, and I didn't want that to happen, so I kept breaking them up. So I finally let them go and stood close by to break anything up that happened. Well, Gus didn't back down and she finally did. So Gus established himself in the top position. Diamond decided that she loved Gus and she started totally ignoring Eddie. Well, that of course drove Eddie crazy, he was standing on his head trying to impress her and she wouldn't give him the time of day. Drove Eddie crazy, he just didn't understand it, especially since she was in love with Gus.
I had reported back to the rescue what happened, and they decided to give her back to the rescue that gave her to me. I told them that I would keep her until the adoption day on the weekend, but they made up their mind. Diamond was a very adoptable girl, and she was very good. She was very very affectionate and good around the house. Her only drawback was that she didn't get along with all dogs. So Diamond went back to the other rescue and Eddie's Psyche was a little damaged. He started peeing in the house again, mostly where her crate was. We got that back under control now.
So now I will be getting a 7 month old chocolate lab this weekend, I figure that will be good for Eddie, and there shouldn't be any dominance problems. We'll see how it goes.

awwwww, sounded like she wanted to be top dog. I'm glad she is going to go somewhere else where she can be a "only child" I wish her well wherever she goes.

I'm glad that all worked out. You know your job Mel. It takes gutts to stand by and let them work it out.
Poor Eddie. First love. :hugsmiley
I can just see Gus standing there saying, o.k. bring it on.
