Title: I'm Getting An 8 Month Old On Saturday
Description: Updated with Pics

MyBoyGus - June 7, 2007 10:54 PM (GMT)
The poor boy and his brother came from an Amish puppy mill. Apparently they were kept in a pen that was filthy. One of the comments that I got about them is that they love the sunshine because they have never seen it before. :bangheadsmiley

They have been together in our system for about a month, and have gone from being too scared of people to even lift their head up to being happy to meet new people.

It is time to separate the boys to make sure that they are OK apart before they get adopted. So Gus and I will be taking one of them. We will pick him up on Saturday. I'll let you know when I get him.

awwwwww.......... I hope they will be okay separated :shrug have they ever been apart before? how old? I can't believe people do these kinds of things to animal's! maybe the people should live in the dirt and see no light.... how would they like it! :grrrsmiley

Beth, I'll take pics when I get him. I should be getting him on Saturday.

Debbie, I've got to admit, this one really makes me angry. I can only imagine what those poor pups had to go through. The email I got from the current foster (she has both of them right now) said:

QUOTE
The boys have just come MILES.  When we picked them up 4 weeks ago they were afraid of everything.  One wouldn't even raise his head to look at you.

In four weeks they have grown to love to meet people and other dogs.  They are great in the car. They are sweet and affectionate.  They have learned alot of social clues from other dogs.  They were TOTALLY lost in that area at first.  But we've had them around alot of dogs from their own age up to our 12+ year old, so their education has been vast.

Awwww, those poor boys! Its beyond me how people can treat an animal of ANY kind like that! Thank God there are people like you to rehabilitate them back into society. I have often thought how fullfilling fostering would be but I wouldn't be able to give them up when they were ready to leave! I would be over run with dogs! :laughingsmile

MyBoyGus - June 8, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
The first few are definitely the hardest to let go. When I first started, I had just lost my 15 year old lab, and I wasn't ready for another dog, but I wanted one around the house. I decided fostering was the way to go for me, so the first few weren't as hard as they would have been otherwise. They told me when I started that there were some that I would cry when they left, and there would be others that I couldn't wait to get out the door. And that has been true. :laughingsmile I've cried and I've been happy. You just have to take the attitude that you are a stop on the way to their forever home. The longer you foster, the pickier you become. There have been a few that I considered keeping, but not that many considering I've been doing this for 4 years now. :speechlesssmiley

Oh poor babies. They sound better now that your Rescue has them. I hope they turn out wonderful dogs and I am sure they will with yours and Guses help. It always breaks my heart to see things like this and I too can't give them up once I get them.

OH, COULD THAT BE WHY I HAVE 9 NOW? HUMM

Give him a kiss and hug for me.

Emma&Tilly - June 8, 2007 09:24 PM (GMT)
These poor pups, people can be so cruel...its amazing how quickly they have begun to trust people again, dogs are so amazing..

Good luck with Eddie, cant wait to see him!

MyBoyGus - June 9, 2007 11:24 PM (GMT)
Well, no pictures yet, but I have him. Eddie and Gus are getting along well. Gus likes him and they are very relaxed around each other. He is definitely not housetrained, even if I get him outside in time, he walks around and chooses go in the house. Oh well, they told me he would be a challenge to housetrain.

He is a very handsome boy, and very sweet and gentle. He is indeed scared of new things. He was afraid to get out of the car, I had to lift him out, and he was afraid to go into the house, I had to lift him in. I still have to help him in and out of the car, but he decided that the house wasn't so bad. He has picked up some bones and toys, and tossed them around, but gets scared if I toss a toy to him, or near him.

He is pretty good meeting new people on a leash. However, if I got to pet him in the house, he usually shies away. I have to come at him from below with my hands. Once I'm petting him, he loves it. He give very nice kisses also. More later. I posted this before, but got timed out. Hope this one takes.

Rusty's mom - June 10, 2007 04:02 AM (GMT)
I hope he does well. I know it will take some time with this one. I bet he misses his brother. How sad you couldn't take them both.

Lots of love to Eddie. Maybe its his name he hates. :)

What is wrong with the forum. It isn't working write tonight.

MyBoyGus - June 10, 2007 07:45 AM (GMT)
Well, I finally got him to pee outside. Lots of praise and a treat. Good boy Eddie. Now its 3:30 in the morning, and I'm still up because he hates the crate so much he won't stop barking and trying to dig his way out of the crate. I live in a townhouse so I can't just let him keep barking. I did try to take him upstairs so he could sleep in the upstairs crate, but he wouldn't go up the stairs. Part of being in a new home I guess. So I came downstairs to sleep on the couch so I can hopefully leave him in the crate without my neighbors hating me and try to get some sleep. Gus stayed downstairs with him for a while, so it wasn't that he was lonely. Gus finally came upstairs, I think to get away from the barking :laughingsmile , he couldn't sleep either. He is such a sweet boy, and I really do like him, but I gotta get some sleep. I did put a kong with some peanut butter in it and a bone in the crate with him, and left the TV on with low sound, but it doesn't help. Anyway, off to try to get some sleep.

MILLER'S MOM - June 10, 2007 02:20 PM (GMT)

when my lab was little she hated her crate. she would bark and bark all night long too. she also was able to unlock the crate door and get out! we finally ended up letting her sleep in our room on a pillow and we closed the door so she couldn't roam the house on her own. thats where shes been since then. I know you probably don't want to train eddie to sleep or be out of his crate but sometime's its something you have to do... for your own piece of mind. does he use the bathroom in his crate?

sorry I can't help but I do hope you get a little more sleep tonight. :sleepsmiley

GoldenMom - June 10, 2007 02:51 PM (GMT)
I need to add: no only did Emily unlock her crate but she was doggie Houdini! When she stayed here with us her crate was in the middle of a room - NOTHING around her. Somehow the throw rug that was about 3 feet from her crate was pulled into the crate! Another time we came home to a PADlocked crate and Emily greeting us at the door! NO ONE HAD BEEN HOME TO LET HER OUT! She is almost 15 and we still call her Houdini dog!

Melissa, is it possible that Eddie was put in a crate when he misbehaved as a punishment?? Can you maybe slide in there a bit with him and pet him while you give him a cookie? Maybe he'll then see the crate as a security blanket instead of a big bad thing.

Lynn

MyBoyGus - June 10, 2007 03:11 PM (GMT)
I'm feeding him in the crate and he is fine then. He did finally settle down. I think sleeping downstairs helped. Every time he started to whine I just said "uh uh" and he quited down, and finally fell asleep.

Debbie, I couldn't get him up the stairs, so leaving in my room is out. He is too heavy to carry. Also, he isn't housetrained, and his former foster told me they tried that, and they each had an accident during the night. He doesn't go to the bathroom in the crate, so I was able to get him outside first thing to go. He got lots and lots of praise.

Lynn, I did try sliding in and petting him. It didn't do any good. Neither did the peanut butter in the kong, he didn't touch it. And he knew it was in there, I held it and he licked a few times.

Its probably a combination of things, everything here is new. Poor baby is very tired this morning, didn't get much sleep last night :laughingsmile I'm finding it difficult to be sympathetic with him, I didn't get much sleep last night either, and it's HIS fault. :spanksmiley

MyBoyGus - June 10, 2007 09:50 PM (GMT)
OK, I've decided that he thinks that inside is the place to pee. He went out for an hour and a half walk around the lake, and did absolutely nothing. Came in the house and immediately peed. :bangheadsmiley He is a great dog other than that.

MyBoyGus - June 11, 2007 11:05 AM (GMT)
Well, we are definitely making progress. I got him upstairs last night, and he went right into the crate and didn't make a peep all night. :clap I'm so proud of him.

GoldenMom - June 11, 2007 01:12 PM (GMT)
Awwwww, poor baby! Sounds like a little kid that has his days and nights confused --- only with Eddie he has his potty area confused! Its sure going to take a lot of patience with him to re-train him to go outside. It will come though. I'm glad he has someone like you, Melissa, to show him the right way! :clap

Lynn

SuzySues - June 11, 2007 06:27 PM (GMT)
Oh Mell he sounds so confused, poor love! You are great & so patient to help him. :thumbsupsmiley

MyBoyGus - June 11, 2007 09:36 PM (GMT)
Aww, thanks guys. Although with him, it doesn't bother me as much as you would think, well, except the barking the first night. But he was quiet last night and this morning when I left for work. I really do love this guy, and he had a hard life before he was in rescue. I found out he was crated 24/7, no wonder the poor baby hates the crate. But I think he trusts me now.

Do you know that this sweet puppy likes to suck my thumb? OK, how weird is that?

GoldenMom - June 11, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
OMG! I have not heard of a puppy doing that before! What a sweetheart! Is he "the one" Mel??? :love663:

I've only had him for about 48 hours, so its too soon to tell. But he has to stop peeing in the house for me to consider it. But I do love him. Of course, it doesn't take long to fall for a puppy.

MyBoyGus - June 12, 2007 12:43 AM (GMT)
Well, they just started playing. :coolpartysmiley Gently, but playing. And Gus started it. Gus really likes this boy.

MILLER'S MOM - June 12, 2007 02:17 AM (GMT)

:clap glad he's making a little progress. :clap :clap for the peeing in the house..... doesn't he make any kind of jesture he's gotta go? :shrug I remember mason would start sniffing all around. I can't remember how my lab was but I do remember she was very stubborn! she was house trained at about 8 weeks old. we got her when she was only 4 weeks old. the people we got her from said the mother was ill and couldn't feed her babies anymore. I also remember she was a WILD one in her younger days! shes almost 15 now.

glad your getting more sleep and that eddie is trusting you more. your a good person for doing what you do. :love663: I couldn't......... I would be like my mother and want them all!!

good luck! hugs to you and eddie! :hugsmiley :hugsmiley

MyBoyGus - June 12, 2007 03:30 AM (GMT)
Well, he went to a doggie birthday party on Sunday night, there were 6 dogs and 9 people there. I'm waiting for my friend to download them from her camera. We have one of him with a party hat on. :laughingsmile He loved his first homemade frosty paw.

GoldenFrost - June 12, 2007 01:25 PM (GMT)
Can hardly wait to see the pictures. Sounds like he is starting to fit in
Gus will help him. Give Eddie and Gus a big hug from me.

Rusty's mom - June 12, 2007 04:08 PM (GMT)
Well, that is the first time I heard you say, you love him. :clap

What ever happens, I am glad he is doing well. Hang in there for the peeing in the house thing. I have nine and they all did it at one time or another.

Marking territory they say.

:hugsmiley to Gus

Oh, ca't wait to see pictures of Eddie at the birthday party! Poor boy, he must think he's died and gone to Heaven with all the love, affection and "firsts" he's experiencing! Awww, his first Frosty Paw! Bet he LOVED it! Its great that Gus loves him as much as you do. I'm sure the housetraining will come along well. He sounds like a smart boy ---- just somewhat confused!

Lynn

MyBoyGus - June 13, 2007 07:59 PM (GMT)
He has started getting it with the peeing, not all of the time, but most of the time. He has discovered that he likes getting praise and treats. :laughingsmile

My friend has been really busy at work, she is working on it. I hope to get them tonight.

Eddie is in just a bit of trouble right now. He started whining in the crate around 4:15am. I tried to quiet him down, but no luck. I figured he had to go outside. So we went downstairs, and out back, and he went right out and peed (good boy). I left the back door open and sat down for a few minutes just in case he had to do anything else. I waited until Eddie laid down and figured he was done. When I went to go upstairs, I discovered that he had pooped in the hallway (don't ask how I found it :ph43r: ). Of course, he didn't poop all in one place, he left a bit of a trail all the way down the hallway and into the living room. He was also a bit soft.

So there I am at 5am, cleaning up the poop that is all over the hall and living room, and then getting the carpet cleaner out to clean the carpet. I didn't really love him too much at that point. I finished cleaning the carpet, and emptying the carpet cleaner, and then tried to go back to bed for an hour or so. Of course, by that time, Eddie was hungry, so he kept whining a little. He just has to get the routine down. He is still a sweet guy, but this morning was not a good morning.

Hang in there. You are so special to do all you do.

That is Moe on the left and Maxine on the right. Everybody thought that Eddie sort of looks like Maxine's love child. Moe was my foster when he was 3 months old.

And I just wanted to point out...look at the size of Eddie's paws! Moe weighs 95lbs. He is also already a little taller than Gus.

MILLER'S MOM - June 16, 2007 01:36 PM (GMT)

so hows eddie been? :shrug are you getting ready to place him yet??

Debbie & mason

MyBoyGus - June 16, 2007 04:00 PM (GMT)
Eddie and Gus are doing really well. Eddie is coming along with his housetraining, but he isn't consistent yet. He doesn know what "outside" means, and he understands that when I walk him before we go to bed, he has to pee. However, my new nickname for him when it comes to housetraining is "special ed".

Eddie and Gus have finally figured out how to play with each others style. It was funny, they wanted to play with each other, but couldn't figure it out at first. Gus wants to wrestle, and Eddie wants to be chased, or to chase. So Eddie would charge Gus full speed and run past him, ears flying and those big feet and long legs going every which way but loose. He is at that age where he is still trying to get used to those huge things sticking out from his chest. :laughingsmile Then Gus would stand over Eddie and paw at him. Eddie thought it felt just great, and wanted him to move his paw a little to the left. Last night, they finally got it together and wrestled and ran. Gus was rolling around on his back, and Eddie went over to check him out. Gus rolled into Eddie and grabbed him with his paws around the neck. That was all it took.

Eddie is going upstairs on his own now, sometimes a bit reluctantly. He thinks that every time he goes upstairs he has to go into the crate, so he does. Even if I leave the crate door open and call him, he just lays there. At least he is learning the routine.

Yes, I think Eddie is ready to be adopted. He took his separation from his brother very well, of course Gus helped. He was in a bit of a funk for 2 days, which isn't bad considering all he had been through. He has been really good with everybody he has met, and is learning how much fun it is to chase a thrown ball. Oh, and all the dogs love him. Even bitchy 12 year old Maxine, who sometimes gets on my foster's case, usually with cause. But she just likes Eddie.

So Eddie has done really well, I'm proud of him. Now, if only 'Special Ed' would disapear. :laughingsmile
