Title: Broken Tooth
Description: - will it be penalised?

molmotta - November 23, 2006 04:29 PM (GMT)
For some weird reason, Dyna has managed to break, yes, break one of her front tooth. Guess she wanted to sing that song "All I want for Christmas" :angrysmiley2

The tooth is almost neatly broken in half, ending just at her gum line, exposing her root. She's obviously not in pain as she is still trying to bite/pull toys with her other front tooth. Now, I'm waiting for a consultation with a canine dentist but the vet that saw her has proposed to fit a cap over it as she is a show dog, but the best option ultimately is to remove the tooth. She has yet to get back to me regarding an appointment with the dentist for further consultation.

My question is, will a missing tooth be penalised in conformation shows? I had planned to enter her in the Asian Kennel Union show in Jan/Feb 07. Sigh...

I know here they penalize for a MISSING tooth but I don't know about a broken one. A broken tooth obviously is not something that is genetic so if they do penalize for it I don't think it would be by much. I would go ahead and see what the canine dentist says and if a cap won't cost you you left arm then you may want to consider it. Before you do anything why don't you get hold of the Asian Kennel Club and ask what the penalty would be, if any. You can probably get them online

I've been told that judges here won't count it against a dog if it was lost in an accident. I've heard about dogs who have finished even when missing a tooth from an accident. Maybe take a note from your vet just in case? Maybe your handler would know?

I AGREE WITH GOLDENMOM, IT IS NOT A GENETIC PROBLEM!!!

THE BREED RING JUDGES DO REALIZE THAT THESE ARE DOGS AND I HAVE SEEN A GOLDEN WITH A HUGE SCAR AND HAIR LOSS ON ITS FLANK, DUE TO A HUNTING ACCIDENT, END UP BECOMING A CHAMPION, THEY MAY END UP WITH SITUATIONS LIKE THIS BUT YET IT IS ""NOT"" A DISQUALIFIING FACTOR BECAUSE IT IS NOT A BREEDING FAULT....

THE SPORTING BREEDS AND THE HERDING BREEDS ARE JUST THAT, AND THINGS CAN HAPPEN TO THE DOGS WITHIN THE BREEDS THAT ARE ALSO GOING FOR THE FIELD AND HERDING TITLES!!!!

A BROKEN TOOTH IS ALSO AN ACCIDENT, BUT YET CHECK IT OUT WITH YOUR SHOW CLUB ORGANIZATION....

Finally, I couldnt wait anymore - I called another vet clinic (highly recommended by friends) and got myself and appointment with the vet/dentist in 2 weeks' time. Gee...

If Dyna's tooth has to be removed, would that be considered "missing"? I mean she will have a gap there... I havent had much luck trying to contact the AKU either. Everyone seem to be on "holiday".

NO THIS WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED A GENETIC, BREEDING FAULT.....

MISSING TEETH IS A BREEDING FAULT, """LOOSING""" A TOOTH IS NOT...

IF YOU HAVE THE TOOTH PULLED THEN LET YOUR VET KNOW THAT DYNA IS A SHOW DOG AND THAT YOU NEED CERTIFICATION THAT THEY TOOTH WAS PULLED DO TO THE TOOTH GETTING BROKE...

TAKE THAT WITH YOU TO ALL SHOWS AND MAKE A COPY OF IT AND SEND IT IN WITH YOUR SHOW ENTRY ALSO....

Oh good!! I'll do that in case the vet says the tooth cant be saved!! I trully dont have much hope in doing a cap on the broken tooth because Dyna is pretty rough and she loves to chew... It'll probably not last very long on her.

Appointment is coming up this week. Hope we can save this...

Had a long morning at the vets today - had a long chat too.

In short - vet said - I'm mad to even think about removing the teeth. I was like "Huh??? that was what the first vet told me!! It was the best way!!" "Rubbish!! Canine dentristy has evolved to similar standards like humans."

:laughingsmile Phew!! So, my fretting for the past two weeks were a waste of energy...

He is going to do a root canal, put a pin in to secure the tooth, grind it a little to complete the "cosmetics" for the tooth. He said "leave it to him to do the cosmetics" to save whatever is left of the tooth. All to be completed within an hour and Dyna can walk out immediately after that. hmmm... Dyna is booked in for next Tuesday. Infact, I've got all my 3 booked in with him next Tuesday - Harley is due for a teeth scaling and polishing (he's 10 so I need to be assured that he's gonna be able to take the aneasthesia) and Davidson for his hips X-ray.

Interesting man... we chatted a bit about nutrition, feeding, other vets we met before, etc...

Wow Mole! Sounds like this man certainly knows what he is doing! I'm sure Dyna will breeze through this beautifully! Question -- will she still be able to chew bones and stuff like that without breaking the tooth again?

Well, that's why I opt not to put a cap/crown/mould over the broken tooth (even though it'll look just like her original tooth), but just to have it ground a bit. It's a front tooth, so I dont think it'll affect her regular chewing, but it might be a problem if she is trying to pick the fuzz of the tennis balls... :laughingsmile

Oh, that's good to hear Mole. Glad Dyna will still be able to chew her bones! Now, the tennis ball fuzz would certainly be a problem with my SunnyRose! :laughingsmile

She's BACK!!!

Here's her tooth after the vet is done. He decided to put a cap on the tooth afterall but he didnt charge me for it. :clap The colour is a bit off but in time, her tooth will darken in colour anyway because of the root canal done to it...

That's great! What a nice man!! Dyna's teeth looks great now, wouldn't have even knew she had broken it if you didn't say anything.

Just an idea, if a tooth did have to be removed, ask them to give you it
and take it with you to shows, taped to the letter. It's an idea LOL

hahaha....!!! Nah... the cap has broken off twice already and replaced once. Now, she is just sporting a broken tooth with a wee bit of metal sticking out. Latest show fashion... LOL!!
