Title: Connor Did It Again

Well I have flat coats and goldens as you know...... there are some issues with the akc.... and while it is always exciting to finish a flat coat.... I have 2 finished and one who is 15 mos. and needs on major..... getting points on a golden is another story altogether..... in flat coats you need to have two dogs enterred to get a point and a major in my region for dogs is 6 and bitches is 7 for flat coats.....

Goldens on the other hand is a significantly different story..... they are very competetive and the point schedule is very high..... needing 5 dogs for one and 15 for two..... 24 for 3, 34 and 53 for 4 and 5 point majors. Most of the shows around our way are 1 point shows.....

Well we sent Connor away to camp this past weekend and he is not home yet, but .......

Connor took the point/s 3 out of four days..... this past weekend down in Jersey..... going
winners dog on friday
BOB on Saturday over 5 specials......
and BW on Monday

Craig was hoping he wouldn't do anything so he would be able to justify not showing him anymore and sending him off with handlers as that just kills him..... but me I am thrilled that connor is doing so well.

So in two weekends total of showing.... Connor picked up 5 points......
not so bad for our previously pointless boy. Now we need to start finding some bigger shows..... although I guess 14 dogs is nothing to sneeze at. The picture above is from his last win at a supported entry in NY

I just read my post and realized it probably makes no sense if you don't show dogs sooo here is the explanation version.

You need fifteen points to finish a championship in any breed in the AKC you also need to have two majors, a major is a show that is valued at 3 or more points up to five.... and is based on how many dogs are enterred of your dogs sex..... for example in flat coats for dogs (males)
2 total dogs enterred = 1 point
4-6 = 2 points
7-9 = 3 (major) and so on and so on.....

in goldens because the breed is more popular
5-14 dogs = 1 point
15-23 = 2 points
24-33 = 3 points and thus a major and so on.....

you can see that in flat coats you don't have to beat as many dogs to get the same number of points.

The reason for this is that the akc in its infinate wisdom has this thing about only 2% of dogs in any breed finishing (thier championships) in any given year..... the way they accomplish this is by having what is called a point schedule.... the point schedule is different for every breed.... with popular dogs needing to beat more dogs in their breed than less popular dog breeds.
Because really it is almost impossible to find a show with more than 10 flat coats enterred...... total..... forget just dogs or just bitches...... so the requirements are different..... however, (in my opinion) this allows some not very nice flat coats to finish their championships because if you plug away long enough you will finish..... and it allows some really beautiful goldens to NOT finish because it is sooooo difficult and requires so many dogs.

We had sent Connor to the handler about 3 weeks ago for 4 days just to see and he got one point that weekend..... he carries his tail a bit high in the ring.... not a gay tail (it doesn't go over his back) but its a "big boy" tail in the ring.... and we weren't sure how he would do....
they say that in goldens you can expect to pay about 15,000 dollars (US) to finish (a championship) on a golden. Its nutty..... its political.... and its expensive.....

Goldens, Labs, I think Dobes, Boxers...... not sure about Rotts...... but there are some very popular breeds that have very high point schedules so its hard to finish them and its political.

This past weekend.....

Connor won Winners Dog on Friday.... so he was best dog of the dogs (males) who had not finished their championships yet.

On Saturday he won Best of Breed over 25 total dogs and bitches including 5 dogs (and bitches) that had already finished their championships, this is unusual because judges usually pick from dogs already finished for BOB

Monday he went Best of Winners so he was the best dog of all of those enterred who had not finished their championships both dogs and bitches.

Congratulations to Connor! (And you). I don't know anything about showing dogs & when I read your first post I sat there trying to figure out what you were saying. After I figured it out, I dropped down to your second post & saw I could have saved alot of time! :laughingsmile Oh well, it was a good workout for the brain!
