Title: Cost to aquire a CHAMPIONSHIP
Allie and the Gang =) - June 15, 2005 09:32 PM (GMT)
Can someone tell me what the cost is to complete a Championship ( round a bout...) Also, how much does it cost to put your dog in an individual AKC show??? Thanks for any info you guys can give. We have a lady that is really really wanting to get Tia in the show circuit......Not sure what to do at this point, or even if its DOABLE!!! :shrug :laughingsmile

In Canada I pay about $22.00 to enter a dog show. There is usually anywhere from 2 to 6 shows per weekend. As every show there will be a best in show. At some shows there are 2 shows a day so that would be $44.00 a day just to enter.
If you want to hire a proffessional handler, ones here that I know charge about $60.00 to handle your dog per show. If you handle yourself, it is free of course.
To get them show groomed, my breeder charges $50.00 for the weekend. Her charge is pretty cheap though. I'm not sure what others charge. Then there's the cost of hotels, food and incidentals. Its pretty expensive now that I've written it out!!! Wow, what the heck am I doing????? He he he just kidding! I love every part of it though.
All this is to just enter one weekend of dog shows. You may not get any points at the shows as goldens have such a HUGE entry!!! So then you have to pay all over again to enter more shows! It does get very expensive and depressing if you don't get any points after you've spent all that money!

What youve told me sounds cheap compared to what ive heard! Can you explain the POINTS system to me?? Thanks so much Sydney and Fishey!
Fisher - June 15, 2005 10:42 PM (GMT)
Cheap? Really? OK let me break it down for you, its kind of hard to understand the way I've written it.
ok say you want to enter a weekend of shows and there is 3 shows for that weekend and you need a proffessional handler and hotel because its too far to commute to.
3 shows at $22.00 a show.......................................$66.00
proffessional groomed............................................$50.00 and thats cheap
handler for 3 shows at 60.00 per show.....................$180.00
hotel for 3 nights at $100.00 a night.........................$300.00
food per day 20.00 ................................................$60.00 and thats low
-----------
$656.00 per weekend
As for the point system, here in Canada you need 10 points total from 3 different judges. The points you get depends on how many goldens are entered.
In the US I'm not sure but I believe you need 3-5 point majors to get your championship.

Well dont get me wrong, it doesnt sound CHEAP, its sounds cheap compared to what ive been told. I was told by someone a while back that it was like $1000 a show. i was BLOWN away! Thanks so much for the info, although i really dont understand totally how it works! I appreciate the info!

I think what you are talking about is $1000 per point
this is the average number that people talk about in the US to finish a golden...... it is not a per show number but rather if you took the total amount of money spent by the owner for the travel and handling and entry fees and then divided it out by the fifteen points you need to finish a dog in the US then you would average roughly 1000 per point.
if you figure that you win some you lose some and we spend roughly $300 per weekend for two shows in the AKC and sometimes you get a point but you usually don't then you can see how the money can add up pretty quickly and thats where the $1000 you are talking about comes in.
for us we spend
25 per entry/day 50 per 2 day weekend.
75 handler/day 150 for the 2 day weekend
food travel and hotel will add up to about a hundred bucks
not to mention all the incidentals like supplies and such
so that is 300 per weekend
so yes it can be pretty expensive.
Canada is a bit less expensive and you don't need as many points to finish nor do you have the major requirement. so the fees are roughly the same although the american dollar goes a bit further so there I spend quite a bit less. If I figure on the exchange rate the entries are roughly 18 bucks the handler is 40 and the hotel travel and such is about the same so it can be a bit less expensive but not alot.
Points are different depending on where you are showing
in the US to finishe a dog (put a Ch. on one).
you need fifteen total points
this includes a major requirement which means a show that is valued at 3 - 5 points. Points are determined by how many dogs are enterred in the show and every breed is different. So for example in flat coats
if you beat one or two other dogs of the same sex you get 1 point
if you beat 3-6 you get 2 points
if you beat 7-9 you get 3 points (thus a major)
9-11 is 4
11+ is 5 points
so you need fifteen points
and of those fifteen points you need to have won two shows that are worth 3 or more points..... and those two shows must be with two different judges.... so in other words you can't win a major with one judge and then go and then find him or her judging at another show and show to him again for the second major.... you must have two different judges give you the majors. It is more involved than this but this is the basics..... I can go into more detail if you like.
In Canada you need 10 total points..... the points are determined by the total number of dogs you beat and thus the sex of the dog is not important..... this is different than the US..... also in Canada the major requirement is one show worth 2 or more points. The point schedule is also the same for all breeds .....
there are pros and cons to both systems..... some will say that it is too difficult to finish a popular breed in the US and too easy in Canada and there is truth to both of those statements to some extent.
hope this helps

Shalva---Thanks so much for that information! I finally understand how this works!
It sounds very difficult. Is there someone i can get to look over Tia, other than this lady in our area, that could tell me if she HAS it?? I really think she might! Thanks again SOOOO much, i appreciate the time you took to type all that!

http://www.grca.org/CCA/default.htmLooking through what's being offered at the big National Golden Retriever 2005 (I don't know WHAT its technically called...), this is one of the things they're offering. I'm NOT a breeder, nor a conformation person, so I really don't know how 'good' it is, though it sounds like a fairly good program..... It isn't offered too widely yet though.
Some people do the CH for fun, some just like to win, and others to help make a decision about breeding thier dog....and along they way ALL those people (okay..maybe not the ones who are just in it to win...!) I'm sure learn about the dogs in general, thier breed(s), and so that is always something you "get" from the cost too. (though...correct me if I'm wrong sidney, shalva, and others! )

My suggestion to you about Tilly is to either talk to your breeder...... that would be my first stop (and remember if she is spayed then you can't show her.... only intact dogs can be shown) but if your breeder is reputable and shows then talk to her and have her evaluate your puppy. If you can't ask your breeder then you might want to go to a few shows and see the dogs in the ring...... perhaps find a professional handler who can evaluate your dog. Talk to some people join your local kennel club and thats where you start.
Remember that in many cases the difference between a show dog and a pet dog is splitting hairs. In my last litter one puppy had a bit of a short muzzle and that made her a pet, another puppy was a bit straight in the front and that made her a pet......
the other option is to put her in the ring and see how she does, this is not something that I would recommend.... it can be really disheartening and discouraging.
There is an excellent book called "show me" its a little 13 dollar barrons book that discusses showing and the points and training.... a good little book that I still refer to......
read the breed standard and then really look at your girl.... be hyper critical.... showing can be brutal.
if I can help in any way.... let me know.

Yep! Just what you said Shalva, is just what I figured. My handler charged $50 I believe - can't exactly remember. I know if he brought the dog to a win then he charged more. He would take the dog a day or so ahead of time though and do the grooming himself. On Dakota's first point we spent $950.00.

I HAD A FUNNY SITUATION HAPPY TO ME TWICE AND WITH THE SAME BITCH I WAS SHOWING.......
BOTH OF THESE SITUATIONS HAPPENED WITHIN 3 DAYS OF SHOWING...
I WENT TO MY FRIENDS HOUSE AND HAD ""K.C"" MY BITCH AND SHE PROCEEDED TO FIND A NICE FRESH PILE OF SUPER GREEN ALFHALFA COW PIE AND SHE ROLLED AND ROLLED AND ROLLED IN IT AND GRANTED SHE WAS A LIGHT GOLDEN AND NOW WAS TOTALLY GREEN FROM HEAD TO TOE SO........
SECONDLY ONE DAY YET AGAIN ""K.C"" DECIDED TO CHASE SOME BUNNIES INTO THE BLACKBERRY BUSHES AND WHEN SHE CAME OUT SHE WAS TOTALLY PURPLE FROM HEAD TO TOE SO.......
THE ENTRIES WERE ALREADY SENT AND THE SUPPLIES FOR GOING TO THE SHOW ALREADY BOUGHT AND THE HOTEL RESERVATIONS ALREADY PRE-PAID AND GUESS WHAT --------WITH BOTH SITUATIONS,,, THE FIRST HER TURNING GREEN AND THE SECOND HER TURNING PURPLE, WE DID NOT ATTEND, SO THAT MONEY FOR THE SHOW AND GETTING READY FOR IT WAS GONE.....
YET JUST ANOTHER COST OF WORKING TOWARDS A CH....

That looks like a good program. The Lab club has something similar to that ...
They let neutered dogs do it so I'm going to enter Dusty in one next time there's one around here. I've always thought he'd be good at conformation ...
